In today’s edition of equity corner, we wanted to shout out grantees KOCO community and STOP Chicago, both of who are a part of the Obama CBA Coalition. In November, the Obama CBA Coalition met up for a virtual “teach-in.” One of the largest advocacy areas is the fight for affordable housing, which has been part of the overall negotiations for the building of the new Obama Center.

Recently, Block Club Chicago wrote about the teach-in and covered the list of demands for city officials, including:

  • Reserving all city-owned vacant lots in South Shore for affordable housing.
  • Creating a pilot affordable housing program for South Shore that requires 60 percent of new housing developments to be reserved for “extremely low-income” households — for example, a four-person household making less than $27,950 per year.
  • Capping rental application fees, move-in fees and security deposits.
  • Using the Chicago Housing Authority’s acquisition program to buy and convert new developments into public housing.
