As the Edward W. Hazen Foundation prepares to close its doors May 2024, we extend our gratitude to our grantee partners for their transformative work and collaboration on our final offering to philanthropy: “Reevaluating Practice: Reimagining Philanthropy.”

This report culminates a five-year spend down process, defined by our grantees and shaped by our commitment to them. The report details the aspirations of grassroots organizations to partner with funders for a more effective and sustainable movement for social justice and highlights the ways funders impeded and empower organizers to mobilize their communities.

In the report, we also share the lessons the Foundation has learned by committing to a partnership that centers the communities and organizations we serve.

We hope this report is a catalyst for transforming conversation into concrete action. Our special thanks to Grantmakers for Effective Organizations for giving “Reevaluating Practice: Reimagining Philanthropy” a home on their website, where it can live beyond the life of the Foundation.

The Foundation, its grantees, partners, and allies envision a future where philanthropy is valued not for its exorbitant wealth, but for its fierce commitment to equity and justice — this report is our final contribution to realizing that future.
